First, the key terms.

Mock
A controlled replacement for a dependency in a test.
Regression
A change that breaks previously working behavior.

The idea, explained

Each test level detects different failures and has different maintenance costs. A mock substitutes for a dependency, making tests controlled and safer, but it cannot prove that the real provider behaves as expected. Useful tests focus on meaningful behavior, including failures and edge cases. A small number of representative system checks complements focused tests rather than replacing them. Production observability remains necessary after tests pass.

STEP 1

Choose a meaningful boundary

Test important decisions and failure cases close to the code that owns them. Use integration tests for real schema behavior and selected end-to-end checks for user actions. A test duplicating the implementation can repeat its mistake.

STEP 2

Interpret passing results honestly

A mock provider accepting an email does not show that the real provider is configured or that a recipient can receive mail. Record which dependencies were simulated and which were exercised.

Follow a worked example.

A newsletter unit test checks topic filtering. An integration test uses a real temporary database to check duplicate prevention. A provider sandbox test verifies the email API contract without broadcasting to real subscribers.

Walk it through, one step at a time

  1. Test that an unconfirmed subscriber is excluded using a real temporary database.
  2. Mock the email provider so the test cannot accidentally broadcast. This validates selection and request construction.
  3. Separately check a controlled real delivery and provider status when verifying production readiness.

Where people get stuck

A fully mocked suite can pass while the application’s actual database or provider configuration is broken.

Now try it yourself.

Pause before opening each answer. Explain your reasoning in your own words.

1. Check the core idea

Does a mock email provider prove that a message reached a recipient’s server?

Reveal the answer & reasoning

No. It proves behavior against the simulated provider. Real delivery evidence must come from the actual provider or an appropriately controlled integration check.

2. Apply what you learned

Can a screenshot prove that a signup form sends email?

Reveal the answer & reasoning

No. It proves appearance at that moment. Submission, consent enforcement, storage, confirmation and provider delivery require behavioral evidence.
