First, the key terms.
- Redemption
- The process for exchanging a claim under its contractual terms.
- Settlement finality
- The point at which a transfer is final under the relevant legal and system rules.
The idea, explained
A token can represent a security, a contractual claim or something with very different rights. Recording transfers on a ledger does not automatically transfer enforceable ownership of an off-ledger asset. Custody, issuer solvency, redemption, governance and the cash leg of settlement remain important. Faster technical transfer is not the same as legal finality. Assess the underlying rights and infrastructure rather than assuming that a modern record format removes traditional financial risks.
Identify what is represented
A token might represent a direct security interest, an intermediary claim or another arrangement entirely. Determine the issuer, custodian, holder’s rights and treatment if a participant fails. These cannot be inferred from a token name.
Trace both sides of the transaction
Transferring an asset record and transferring final money are related but distinct operations. Ledger speed does not ensure finality, reserve adequacy or a functioning redemption process. Traditional risks can remain in new infrastructure.
Follow a worked example.
A fictional token claims to represent part of a bond. A buyer must still understand who holds the bond, whether the claim is enforceable, how income is distributed and what happens if the platform fails.
Walk it through, one step at a time
- A platform offers a token said to represent a bond held by a custodian.
- Ask whose name is on the bond, what the token holder can enforce and whether redemption can be suspended.
- Then examine how the buyer’s cash settles. A visible token transfer alone does not answer those questions.
Where people get stuck
A token’s existence or ledger transparency does not prove the underlying reserve, ownership claim or redemption promise.
Now try it yourself.
1. Check the core idea
Does moving a token instantly ensure that a buyer has received both legal title and final cash settlement?
Reveal the answer & reasoning
No. Those depend on the legal structure, asset, payment mechanism and settlement rules, which may not align with ledger transfer time.
2. Apply what you learned
Does a public transaction history prove that an off-ledger reserve exists?
Reveal the answer & reasoning
No. It shows recorded ledger activity. Independent evidence of the reserve, custody and enforceable rights is a separate requirement.
